ABRIL MEZA
Abril Meza wants to go to the University and become a Psychologist or Lawyer. She has no sight and in 2009 lost her mother in a car accident and now lives with her grandmother and younger brother.
She wakes up every morning at 4am to commute to school where she faces multiple challenges because of the lack of resources for the blind. In addition, she faces multiple bullies on an everyday basis. In spite of these challenges she has managed to have perfect attendance and grade point average.
Abril is our first HERO and recipient of the scholarship program and thanks to generous donations by friends of the Gurmilan Foundation she recently received a new Perkins Brailler and school supplies to help her in her pursuit of her educational goals. In addition, her family has also received a constant supply of used clothing that her grandmother and uncle sell at the local swap meet to provide for their basic needs.
